Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to examine the influence of leadership power and authority within an organization.
Instructions
Reflect on the readings and lesson this week and address the following:
- Select a leader within your organization who has a formal title and, therefore, power by virtue of their position.
- Examine how they influence the organization as a whole and their staff regarding diversity, justice, and equity.
Solution:
Effective leadership today relies more on influencing others by impacting their opinions, ideas, and actions. The success of leaders, therefore, depends on their ability to influence both the individuals who report direct and whom the leader does not have direct authority. The leader selected is the charge nurse, and one of the ways that he influences the organization is through rationalizing. This means that he uses logic, facts as well as reasoning to present the ideas to the people under his authority and the organization as a whole. He easily leverages his logic, expertise, and experience to persuade the staff.
