Preparing the Assignment
Nurse practitioners provide high-quality, comprehensive care to clients in various healthcare settings. Standardized procedures may be used to help guide care. Boards of Nursing, such as CaliforniaLinks to an external site., provide resources to ensure that NPs provide quality care while functioning within their scope of practice. Identify the assigned topics listed by the first letter of your last name. For example, if your last name is Smith, then your assigned topic is urinary retention in older adults.
First Letter of Your Last Name | Topic |
---|---|
A – C | Syphilis in older adults |
D – G | Dyspareunia in postmenopausal females |
H – K | Hemorrhoids in older adults |
L – O | Candida vulvovaginitis in postmenopausal females |
P – R | Vasomotor instability in perimenopausal females |
S – V | Urinary retention in older adults |
W – Z | Elevated PSA in males ages 50 and over |
Include the following sections (detailed criteria listed below and in the Grading rubric). Use the standardized procedure templateLinks to an external site. to complete the assignment.

Name:
- Definition
- Disease or condition: Vasomotor instability in perimenopausal females.
Vasomotorinstability (VMI) is a condition characterized by hot flashes, night sweats, and heartpalpitations that affect women during perimenopause and menopause (Khan et al., 2023). Perimenopause is the transitional period that leads to menopause. It usually affects women in their 40s and early 50s even though the exact time of onset varies across individuals (Faubion et al., 2022).
- Pathophysiology
As described by Khan et al. (2023), the development of VMI occurs due to fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels due to progressive decline in ovarian follicles and reduction in endogenous estradiol. Estrogen fluctuations disrupt the function of the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center, leading to body temperature dysregulations such as an increase in the body’s reaction to endogenous and exogenous triggers for heat loss prevention(Khan et al., 2023).Temperature dysregulation causes alterations in blood vessel activity, including cutaneous constriction or vasodilation, leading to feelings of hot flashes (and association skin flushing, perspirations (including night sweats), heart palpitations, and chills) as seen in perimenopause and menopause women (Talaulikar, 2022).
- Incidence and prevalence
According to Khan et al. (2023), in the United States, menopause affects women at the median age of 51.3 years. Moderate to severe VMS affects 34% of 40-65-year-old women in the U.S. (Nappi et al., 2021).Globally, VMI affects about bout 80% of women, with varied severity and impact on general health and quality of life (Khan et al., 2023)…… Click purchase for full solution
